Carly aka "Penny"
Penny came to DRI from a shelter in WV. We have no idea why she ended up there and what such a sweet dog would be doing in a shelter (we wonder that about them all !) but penny, now re-named Carly has no worries at all! Carly was adopted by a wonderful family who just lost one of their beloved dobermans and had a void in their hearts. Here is what they had to say about Carly...
Carly was named after you. My mom thought its so wonderful what you do for |
![]() Annabelle Annabelle came to DRI from a a shelter in Illinois. The odds of her getting out of the shelter, being that she is a pit bull, were slim to none. Which is why DRI decided to pull her and another pit bull solomon at the same time. Annabelle is sweet as can be, just like all the other pits DRI has helped. It wasn't long and she would be going "home"...Thank you Ryan! Here is what her new family had to say about her... Well, from day one it was a hard decision what kind of breed we wanted. I decided that i wanted a pit bull because i felt a need to show people that they arent killers or maulers like the media portrays. I went to the local humane society to find a dog. In the kennels, i found 3 mixed dogs and 6 pitbulls. When i asked to see one of the pits i was interested in, i was told no, he is being destroyed. When i asked why, the manager replied, "because we cannot get rid of them". I was apalled- here i was asking for a dog and being told no. My wife and i looked around and found DRI on the internet. We contacted DRI about a pit bull we found on petfinder.com. We scheduled a visit and fell in love with her. She is to date the best dog i have EVER owned! She is so sweet with our cat, and she is an official part of our family. She goes on vacation with us and also swims with us every chance she gets. Annabelle is 100% non-human agressive. She is learning to stay home without the crate and is already housebroken. Sometimes, she sneaks up on the bed while we're sleeping, and as much as i know she's not allowed, i can't help but to let her occasionally because she is like a child to me. After spending the last month with Annabelle, my first pit, it makes me sad to see how many people are afraid of pits and avoid them. I've done my research and i found that alot of them are used for fighting and other inhumane things. I could NEVER imagine that she would be agressive with us or children, and i have a hard time beleiving that they are "naturally agressive". I have acually devoted my sundays to "educate" people and parents on pit bulls and encourage them to adopt them instead of buying them. I take Annabelle to the local pet stores and parks and answer any questions people may have. One person at a time is slow, but in the end, it may make a difference for a pit that needs a loving home. DRI improved my whole life by giving me Annabelle, i cannot thank them enough! If DRI ever needs help transporting or taking care of dogs, they can call me anytime because they have made my life so much more fullfilling by helping me find my best friend! |
![]() Ube Ube is one of "Rosie's" pups. Rosie (a red female dobe) had a litter of dobe/mix pups, her and the pups were dumped in a night deposit box on a cold rainy night at a shelter. Unfortunatly one died in a shelter volunteers arms that night, it was just too late despite their efforts. We were asked to help, it wasnt looking good for any of them. We literally had to do anything and everything we could to keep them alive. They (including mama) were full of worms their stomachs were huge, they were also covered in mange and were in the worst shape imaginable a pup could be in. Rosie's stomach was so raw and sore it made nursing painful and difficult. After days and weeks of praying and doing everything we could to keep them alive we were in the clear...they were all going to make it! Ube was adopted by a man named keith he says "Ube is doing awesome. He is still a little skittish of people but warms up quick". Thank you Keith!

![]() Jasmine (AKA Sawsha) and Baron Jasmine was originally named sawsha in her previous life that she has now. She originally came to DRI when she was a pup. She was adopted and her owner moved to a place that didn't allow dogs... And at the time he had 2! Dogs are family and should be treated as family! So Jasmine was returned to DRI and adopted out once more and now she is in her forever home where she is the queen of the house. Almost a year after adpoting Jasmine the Kester's decided they would like to rescue another dog so that Jasmine could have a playmate. Baron came to DRI from a shelter in NY. For whatever reason they said he had some food aggression issues. We NEVER saw any problem with him and his new family has said the same. Baron was a very well behaved and good boy here. We are happy he too is fitting in so well with his new family! Thank you Kester Family!
Hello,
As you can see we have decided to keep his name Baron. He is doing fabulous. He sucks up all the attention. He and Jasmine get along fine and she will even play with him once in a while. He spends most of his time laying on our laps. While he is a food thief if left in his reach, he shows no signs what-so-ever of any kind of food aggression. There is no growling when jasmine is near him and he sits politely to wait for treats. He has settled in very quickly. Other than 1 or 2 messes in the house during his first days, he seems to be completely housebroken. He knows "sit" and "down" and is quickly learning "shake". He is really a sweet wonderful dog.
Thank You for everything,
Christine
UPDATE 4/30/09:
When we got Jasmine she was such a perfect dog. Other than a few fears she had from her previous life, she was so well behaved and perfect! But she was very lonely. So we decided to adopt Baron. We were warned of his "food agression". Other than once nipping at Jasmine when he was scared she would steal a treat, he has never showed any agression. Who could blame him. On the street he was starving and couldn't find food. He eats politely off a fork and takes treats from my 3 year old granddaughter. He is our problem child though. He is a world class BRAT!!! Steals anything you leave out, eats anything he can find....food, medicine, vaseline....He will push Jasmine away to steal the attention....like a little child. He is also the sweetest dog you could ever want. He is the most loving dog to all of us and lays with my 9 month old granddaughter when she visits. He is always on our laps. Jasmine and Baron are such sweet dogs. I don't know how anyone could ever have let either of them go. Thanks You,
Christine & Budd Kester

![]() Molly and Maddie (AKA "Missy and Pepper") Molly and Maddie came to DRI from Ashtabula Ohio. They were both in a very over-crowded shelter that needed to get dogs into rescue or they would be euthanized. Maddie is Rat Terrier about 7 lbs. A little shy but still very loving and sweet. Molly is a mix of some sort our best guess is she is a lab/beagle mix? But she is small as well only around 18lbs. While we were at Grandview Park Bark (Nov. 2007) we never thought we would find these two gals a new family. But after Mary met them she fell in love with both girls and would soon be taking them home. Mary had just lost her beloved companion in June and wanted to fill the void in her heart. Molly and Maddie sure did. They now have a wonderful home and a beautiful yard to play together in and share lots of love with their new mom. We are SO happy for these girls. Thanks so much Mary!!! The girls are doing better than fine, they are wonderful. Molly has gained weight and now is up to 22 lbs. while Peanut (Maddie), who was so sick and lost weight the first week (my vet said it was probably due to the stress of the spaying along with her shots and the double move) has gone up to 9.9 lbs. from a low of 6.2 lbs. So both are doing great! Molly ran out the front door last week and scared me nearly to death. Needless to say, both girls are now chipped and I'm going to town to get their licenses Monday. They have both settled in very well though I still have to teach Molly better manners when I walk her. (she thinks other dogs and people are out to get her so she attacks them before they attack her). That will all work out though. As soon as I can figure out how to email photo's, I'll send you some digitals we took last week. We are also planning to have their pictures taken with Santa at Petsmart this coming weekend so if I don't figure out the email thing, I"ll send you a hard copy by snail mail. Till then, have a great holiday and thank you so much for completing our home after our beloved Nikki crossed the bridge.
Mary Causey
